I came home this weekend for the first time since early May, and I was greeted at the door by a very old, yet very excited dog. Some people (mostly people without dogs) find it weird how obsessed people can be with the furry animals, but in my mind I don’t see how you couldn’t be. I have had Tanner since I was in fourth grade, she’s twelve years old now.
I am an only child-my dog was all I had growing up, well besides my parents. She slept with me every night and woke me up every morning (way too early for my liking) to play with her. I was scared when I first went to college that she would be mad at me when I left, boy was I wrong.
Tanner’s really old now, her spine no longer tells her back legs to walk, she actually looks hammered when she tries to get from point A to point B. When I walked through the door on Thursday night she scurried (dragging her hind legs) all the way to the door smiling the whole way. You may not believe me, but my dog smiles, she snorts as well, it is adorable. Needless to say this is probably going to be the last time I see Tanner, but she has been the best dog a girl could ask for. She was there for every major event in my life, and she is the best cuddle buddy anyone could ask for. It was almost as though she has a sixth sense that tells her when I am upset, or am happy and want to play.
It amazes me how a dog would do anything for a human, and how much unconditional love they are filled with. I think if people loved like dogs the world would be a much happier place.
